ACOS was founded by a group of parents in cooperation with staff from the South Kitsap School District. Our mission is to help other parents advocate for their high achieving children and their unique learning needs. Many high achieving
students need something more or different than what the standard classroom
provides. There are a variety of
excellent programs for students who require extra help but accommodations for
students who learn at an advanced pace can be difficult to find.
We fully support our schools and respect the dedication of our students’ teachers. We also recognize the demands placed on classroom teachers to meet a variety of learning needs and challenges. We understand that the focus of instruction often must go to those students who need to be brought up to standard rather than those who are excelling beyond the standard.
We also understand that our high achieving students desperately need to be challenged academically. Students who are not challenged to the extent of their abilities run the risk of losing their natural love of learning. They begin to believe that school does not have anything to offer them and feel detached rather than engaged during their school day. As a parent, you are an important part of your child’s education and you can make a valuable difference in their academic experience.
We want to help you learn to advocate for your high-achieving student and partner with his or her classroom teacher to foster a successful learning experience. You know your child’s needs best and what works well for one child may not address the needs of another. We cannot give you all the answers but we can offer you valuable resources to aid you in meeting the unique needs of your child. Please explore this site to find useful information on everything from research about the high achieving child to challenging activity sites your child may enjoy. Sometimes knowing where to begin is the hardest part of making a change. Let ACOS be that starting point for you!
